In next month's election, all 105 seats in the South Dakota state legislature are up for grabs. Candidates for several of those spots are under the age of 30, including one from Sioux Falls set to be sworn in as the youngest woman to be elected to the senate.
The race for state senate isn't much of a competition in District 15. 25-year-old Angie Buhl, a first-time candidate, doesn't have a challenger, and when the Democrat is sworn in next month, she will be the youngest female senator in South Dakota history.

A recent USD graduate will become the youngest female state senator in South Dakota history Nov. 2.
Democrat Angie Buhl beat incumbent Kathy Miles in the Sioux Falls District 15 Democratic Primary Election and because there wasn't a Republican bid for the seat in the general election, Buhl will be sworn in to the state legislature in January.

Depending on which statistics you look at, South Dakota's Democratic Party either has a bright future or a dismal one.
On one hand, Democrats have no candidate for U.S. Senate to challenge incumbent John Thune. It's the first time in South Dakota history that the party lacks a representative on the ballot for the high-powered office.
On the other hand, Democrats registered 10 times as many voters as Republicans from 2006 to 2008, a surge connected to a compelling state primary in which then candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and President Clinton campaigned in South Dakota while the Democratic presidential nomination hung in the balance.

One of the untold stories out of last month's primary was Angie Buhl, the 25-year-old who beat an established incumbent. Buhl took out Democrat Kathy Miles in the District 15 Senate race in Sioux Falls. Miles was running for her second term in the Senate after serving the district for three terms in the House.
